The Brown-hooded kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) lives in woodland habitats on the eastern side of Southern Africa, It is seen in gardens and parks as well as in the countryside in the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The Kingfisher eats mainly insects, mammals, birds reptiles and very rarely fish.
The Kingfisher hunts by perching and searching for prey. Once prey is located it flies down to grab the prey and will fly back to it's perch to eat. Not even snakes up to 23 cm long are safe from this predatory bird.
